Based on four different kinds of beer, Barlines is a four-movement concerto for bass trombone and trombone octet. The movements, in order, are Pale Ale, Hefeweizen, Vanilla Porter, and IPA. Commissioned by a good friend and former Texas State and University of Alabama alumni, the music for this piece was constructed around descriptions of the flavors of the different beers involved. Various aspects of the flavors were serialized as specific musical ideas, which gives each movement a unique identity but keeps the concerto cohesive as it develops. Two motives charge the melody for the soloist based on the words “hops” and “beer”. Performance time is about 10 minutes.
